Eclipses in Astrology
Eclipses in Astrology
An eclipse occurs when three celestial bodies align on the same plane, temporarily dimming or obscuring the light we normally see. While celestial eclipses are varied, in astrology, we focus primarily on the profound impact of lunar and solar eclipses. These powerful events happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align, disrupting our regular routines and offer a unique opportunity for introspection! Eclipses are more than just astronomical events; they are astrological times of significant shifts and heightened awareness.
Solar Eclipses
A solar eclipse happens during a New Moon & the Moon positions itself between the Sun and Earth, blocking the Sun's light. This temporary vanishing of sunlight is a potent symbol of new beginnings and unexpected changes.
Astrologically, solar eclipses amplify the New Moon energy, bringing sudden events and fresh starts. The impact varies depending on where the eclipse falls in your birth chart, highlighting specific houses and signs.
The moon is at the right distance from the earth to appear big enough to block the sun's light.
Lunar Eclipses
Lunar eclipses occur during a Full Moon, when the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon's surface. This event brings culminations, releases, and heightened emotional awareness.
The full moon, usually big and full, is then blocked by the earth. This is when the earth blocks the light of the sun
These eclipses amplify the Full Moon energy, prompting us to confront deep-seated emotions. Again, the houses and signs involved in your chart will reveal the personal significance.
Eclipse Seasons
Eclipses occur in seasons, typically lasting 5 to 6 weeks, twice a year, when the Sun is within 18 degrees of the Moon's nodes. These nodes, the 'eclipsing places,' move backward through the zodiac, spending approximately 18 months in each sign.
Any new or full moon during that time will be an eclipse.
The strength of an eclipse varies within the season. Stronger, more total eclipses occur in the middle of eclipse season, when the Sun/lunation (New or Full Moon) is closest to the nodes. Conversely, weaker/partial eclipses occur the further the new or full Moon is from the nodes, typically at the beginning and end of the season.
The energy from an eclipse is most powerful and can last for up to two weeks following the first eclipse of the eclipse season.
The path of the eclipses follows the path of the nodes. The north and south nodes are always on the same axis and in opposing signs in the zodiac. Every 18 years the north and south node will return to the same sign. But every 9 years they will be in the same pair of signs but reversed. For example in 2025 north node in pisces and south node in virgo. 18 years ago the same. 9 years ago the north node was in virgo and the south node in pisces.
Eclipse energy can be extreme, unsettling, and disruptive. They can also bring breakthroughs and profound shifts.
Interpreting Eclipses in Your Personal Chart
To understand how an eclipse might influence you, consider the zodiac sign being activated and the houses where the eclipse falls in your birth chart. Specifically, eclipses will activate or agitate a pair of houses over an 18-month period, which is the amount of time the nodes are in each sign pair.
Topics of those houses are stirred up, ripe for renewal but also ready for release.
During an eclipse your sense of perception might be different. Engage and embrace in the shadows inside you that are not clear. Go inward within yourself. Might be uncomfortable, but insightful. This could be a time of inner healing. Time to go slower than usual. Brings new awareness.
The meaning of the eclipse is determined by which node is closest to the Moon:
North Node: Represents increase, amplification, material gains, ambition, logic without emotion, excess, and breakthroughs.
South Node: Represents decrease, dispersal, letting go, spiritual focus, emotional vulnerability, and endings or new beginnings.
The ruler of the eclipse is the planet ruling the sign where the Moon is located. The condition of this planet further refines the interpretation.
Eclipse nodes can be in a different sign than the moon, but still within 18 degrees.
Remember, every 19 years, the eclipse returns to the same sign, but the ruler's placement will differ, altering the energy.
Eclipses are powerful times, urging us to delve into our inner shadows and embrace new awareness. By understanding the astrological significance of lunar and solar eclipses, we can navigate these cosmic events with greater insight.
